But Christmas is not just limited to markets. The rich and varied program manages to involve adults and children. You won’t get tired of performances, exhibitions, concerts and shows.
On November 26th at 16:30, at Domplatz, an appointment with the opening ceremony marking the official start of Christmas in Erfurt 2024.

THE PLACES OF CHRISTMAS IN ERFURT 2024

DOMPLATZ

Christmas in Erfurt

Without doubt, the place par excellence of the celebrations.
Beautiful and suggestive, the square is dominated by the splendid St. Mary’s Cathedral and Church of St. Severus.
Beautifully decorated, and illuminated, Domplatz offers a romantic setting, absolutely unparalleled
Among the various stands, you can buy Thuringian handicrafts and beautiful decorations. Savor regional gourmet delicacies, Christmas sweets and, of course, mulled wine.
You will also find a splendid display of Advent flower arrangements and garlands, made by the best Thuringian florists.

The majestic Christmas tree dominates the square, beautifully decorated. Nearby, you can admire a nativity scene, with wooden figures and the famous Pyramid, another symbol of Christmas in Erfurt. 12 meters high, it is composed of five octagonal sections, each with a distinct theme, and a total of 30 life-size wooden figures.

In the square, you will also find zoo animals. Visitors will be able to admire them in wooden huts decorated to the nines.

ANGER

For those coming by train, Anger is the first market you meet, just left Willy Brandt Platz.
Anger is one of the main shopping streets of the city and, at Christmas, it hosts several stalls and a carousel for children. Typical regional products and artifacts dominate the stands.
The ideal place for a quiet walk, breathing the Christmas atmosphere.
Don’t miss the next stop along the Schlösserbrücke bridge.

FISHMARKT

The beautiful square, home to the Town Hall, is a particularly lively and lively place throughout the year. At Christmas, the place is a festive explosion of lights, colors and scents.
You can stroll among the many stalls, looking for the right gift. Or stop for a gourmet break.

OTHER MARKETS

For those looking for more intimate places, the alternatives are not lacking.
The Fairtrade Christmas market, for example, stands on the ruins of the Franciscan monastery. The stalls offer, almost exclusively, fair trade products.

East of the Merchants Bridge, you will find the small Wenigemarkt. Market with a few stalls, with an intimate and welcoming atmosphere.

The markets are open daily from 10:00 to 20:00. Only the markets at Domplatz have the following opening hours:

  • from Sunday to Wednesday, from 10:00 to 20:00.
  • Thursday, from 10:00 to 21:00.
  • Friday and Saturday, from 10:00 to 22:00

CHRISTMAS IN ERFURT FOR CHILDREN

Christmas lights in Erfurt, Germany

In addition to the many activities for adults and children, the little guests of Erfurt can enjoy many activities dedicated to them.
At Domplatz, do not miss the appointment with the eco-bakery for children. The little ones can participate in the preparation and cooking of the products. Appointment from Monday to Friday, starting at 15:00; Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00.

At the bottom of the stairs of the Cathedral, the Enchanted Forest is a highlight of Christmas in Erfurt.
Elf and fairy-tale figures animate this evocative fir forest, between magic and dream.
The little ones can listen to the tales, every Saturday and Sunday, from 13:30 to 15:30; Tuesday and Wednesday, from 10:00 to 11:00.
The enchanted forest is open every day until 22nd December at the following times:
Sunday – Wednesday, 10:00-20:00
Thursday: 10:00-21:00.
Friday – Saturday: 10:00-22:00
From 24 to 26 December, from 08:00 to 20:00.
