Preserve and revitalize the past. The slogan, well represents the soul and the spirit of the Imperial City Festival (Reichsstadt Festtage),. This is an annual event that takes place in September in the wonderful town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
It is a real gem with medieval architecture that, for the occasion, becomes a sort of open-air theater. The best way to relive the good old days, thanks to the numerous inhabitants and local historical groups.
An extraordinary and incredibly truthful re-enactment. At the Imperial City Festival, everything is meticulously treated. Thousands of meters of fabric are worked to reproduce the original fashions of the past; the ancient equipment are brought back to life. All this, gives a truly magical and suggestive aspect, as few can do.
Obviously, at the Reichsstadt Festtage, you will find many stands offering many delicacies and delicacies of the regional tradition. And, of course, so much wine to accompany the dishes.

HOW TO GET
The relative proximity to Nuremberg International Airport, makes Rothenburg ob der Tauber, easily accessible by plane. The only flaw is represented by the connections between the airport and the city.
Anyone wishing to arrive by public transport must be armed with a lot of patience. From the airport, you can reach the station of Nuremberg HBF by train; from the latter, you get to Rotehenburg, always by train, changing line to Ansbach and Steinach.
Renting a car directly at the airport is, in our opinion, more than just an option.
IMPERIAL CITY FESTIVAL 2023 PROGRAM
Market Square is the centerpiece of the review. On Friday evening, as usual, there is a large procession with extraordinary lighting, effects and pyrotechnic games. The play of light, with historical groups, make the city sparkle at twilight. Not to be missed.
Saturday and Sunday, you will be able to relive the past, walking in the beautiful medieval city. Surprises and succulent delicacies await you in the square and among the stands present. Here, some of the most significant events not to be missed:
- Friday. At 19, Camp of the Knights of 1274 and opening of the Medieval market. From 20:30, at the Market Square, presentation of historical groups. Follow, music and fireworks in front of the Town Hall.
- Saturday. From 10 to 21: 30, music and entertainment at Grüner Markt. At 17: 00, there will be the historic battle at Monastery Garden. At 21:30, however, the fireworks show (at Double Bridge, the best view). Great closing at 22:30 with a night concert at St. James’ Church.
- Sunday. Piazza del Mercato and Grüner Markt will also be protagonists of the last day. At 17:00, closing with music and shows at St Wolfgang Church.
WHERE TO SLEEP
One of our top solutions is, without a doubt, Villa Mittermeier, Hotellerie und Restauration. Housed in a traditional villa, this charming hotel is located opposite the Würzburger Tor gate, also known as Galgentor. Really a great choice!
In a great location, rather central Hotel & Gasthof Schwarzer Adler represents one of the best solutions for quality/price ratio. The cost of a double room for a weekend is around €150.
