WHERE: Mamoiada, Sardinia
WHEN: 02nd and 04th March 2025
From a small regional event, to one of the unmissable folk events in Italy.
In just a few decades, Mamoiada Carnival has increasingly managed to take on the characteristics of a national holiday, attracting more and more tourists.
Today, with Oristano, it can be considered the most important Carnival in all of Sardinia!
A Carnival closely linked to tradition, whose great protagonists are the Mamuthones and the Issohadores who parade through the streets of the center.
Masks, dark furs and cowbells hanging on the back for the former. White masks with headdresses, red bodices and white trousers for the latter.
Their origins are very ancient and are lost over the centuries between the sacred and the profane.
Today, of these figures, we can admire costumes and, above all, masks, often true works of art, the result of the expert work of the best local master craftsmen.
Mamoiada is a small town in Barbagia, in the Sardinian hinterland, about 20 kilometers south of Nuoro and over 200 from Cagliari.
The car is undoubtedly the best way to reach the small Sardinian town. It takes about 2 hours to get to Mamoiada by car.
Those who want to use public transport have only the bus available. At least 4/5 trips to/from Nuoro are guaranteed every day. The travel time is about 20 minutes and the ticket (purchased on board) costs €1.90 per person.
The Sardinian carnival officially begins, as per tradition, in conjunction with the celebrations of Sant’Antonio Abate, on January 17th. After the official dressing up, the Mamuthones parade through the streets of the center.
The next parades will be on Sunday 02 and Tuesday 04 March 2025.
Everything takes place as per tradition, with the parade proceeding through the streets in rigorous silence. In a truly surreal atmosphere, only the sounds of the cowbells can be heard.
Once the procession is over, it is time for the party. People dance, eat and let loose until late at night.
The event is free for all spectators.
The accommodation offer in Mamoiada is really limited and, therefore, given the proximity, the best solution for sleeping is definitely Nuoro.
