Today, the Christmas in Munich is synonymous with tradition, quality and great suggestion. Christkindlmarkt am Sendlinger Tor, in the beautiful Marienplatz, is undoubtedly the most famous, but, during the Advent season, the choice is really wide and evocative.

During the Advent season, you can breathe all the charm and the magical atmosphere of Christmas. The air is pervaded by the scent of biscuits, cinnamon and mulled wine. The streets, the squares, the buildings are all a whirl of sparkling lights and colors. Large decorated trees. Christmas in Munich is truly magical and evocative.

The stalls are an invitation to visit and rummage, looking for the best deal. Decorations, souvenirs, handicrafts, gastronomy, and much more. In addition to the traditional Munich Christmas markets, there will be plenty of shows and events for all ages. Children and families can spend extraordinary moments of joy and celebration.

You can take a trip to the Magical Christmas Village. In Tollwood, a rich program of events and live music awaits you. And, again, a medieval flea market, the ever-present ice rink and even evening bus tours to the Franz Josef Strauss airport.

CHRISTMAS IN MUNICH 2023: BEST MARKETS

CHRISTKINDLEMARKT

In the city center, Altdstadt area, one of the most beloved markets. They are appreciated for its extremely welcoming atmosphere, and for the quality, and quantity, of objects, coming from all over the world. This is the oldest Christmas market in the whole city.

The large arch, with the inscription Christkindlmarkt, all lit up, welcomes visitors. Among the many stalls present, there are spices, teas and perfumed oriental oils, jewels, semi-precious stones and chests. Very beautiful, the original cribs of Tyrol, Peru and the Andes. Naturally, there is no lack of decorations that you can take home. And then, candles made in a meticulous way, an incredible variety of hand-worked and hand-carved soaps; sparkling crystal glasses of Russia.

The greediest, however, can savor the excellent sausages, and Bavarian gastronomic products. To drink, excellent craft beer, and mulled wine.

The Christkindlmarkt Market is open from 27 November to 24 December, with the following times:
From Monday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 21:00.
Sunday, from 10:00 to 20:00.
Christmas Eve (24/12) from 10:00 to 14:00.

CHRISTMAS IN MUNICH: SCHWABINGWER

For over four decades, Schwabinger Weihnachtsmarkt has been the choice for connoisseurs. In the Münchner Freiheit area, you will find really unique and interesting pieces: objects, art, crafts and gastronomy.

In the big tree, you’ll find lots of colorful hearts hanging with the names and wishes of the children. Anyone wishing, can satisfy the desire, and return the gift to the market within the December 16. Rather rich, and varied, the music program and entertainment events for children. The Schwabinger flea market is open from 27 November to 23 December, with the following times:
From Monday to Friday, from 12:00 to 20:30.
Saturday and Sunday, from 11:00 to 20:30.
Inauguration Friday 26/11, from 18:00 to 20:30.

MEDIEVAL MARKET WITTELSBACHER

It is a real reference point for all lovers of the genre. It is one of the traditional historical Munich Christmas markets. It takes place at Wittelsbacher Platz, not far from Odeonsplatz.

A truly fascinating and evocative place. You will literally be catapulted into the age of knights, noblewomen and minstrels. To give further authenticity, all the stalls are made of antique wood, inlaid, handmade, with medieval engravings. You will find goldsmiths, lantern builders, scribes, or glass artisans, ready to show all the construction phases, from antiquity to today.

In this market you really breathe incredible magic. Impossible to remain indifferent.

You can also buy handicraft items of fine workmanship.

The medieval market is open from 27 November to 23 December, with the following times:
From Monday to Sunday, from 11:00 to 21:00.

TOLLWOOD WINTERFESTIVAL

Defining it one of the most interesting Christmas markets in Munich is really reductive. The name itself, Tollwood Winterfestival, leaves no room for misunderstanding. Tollwood is a real event in the event.

It is a festival of international appeal that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

OTHER CHRISTMAS MARKETS MUNICH

The magic of… pink returns to Munich. From 27 November 2023 Stephanplatz will once again host the Pink Market, the most refined and tolerant market in the city, dedicated to LGBTIQ communication but open, of course, to everyone. Delicious food, mulled wine, original gift ideas and a rich musical program with DJ starting at 7pm. The market takes place every day, Monday to Friday, from 4pm to 10pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm. at 22:00.

Monaco boasts a centuries-old tradition in crib art, famous throughout the country. The Nativity scene market therefore represents an unrepeatable moment to admire these small handcrafted masterpieces. The Krippelmarkt market takes place in front of the St. Peter’s Church. Nativity scenes, figures, shepherds, accessories, decorative items and a beautiful nativity scene with life-size wooden figures are exhibited.

At the Chinesischer Turm, from 24 November, the traditional markets set up in the Garden that houses the Chinese Tower. Lots of stalls and activities for the little ones, with readings and stories.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Not just Munich Christmas markets. During the Advent period, numerous events are scheduled in the Bavarian city.

In Marienplatz and in the historic center, on 10 December, the traditional and evocative KRAMPUS parade takes place. A parade with about 400 disturbing figures. More info, on our official page dedicated to the event.

ADVENT MUSIC is an annual event much awaited by tourists and inhabitants. Every day, starting at 17:30, you can listen to live music from the balcony of the town hall. On Christmas Eve, at 12 noon, Christmas carols will be sung.

CHRISTMAS FOR CHILDREN

Until 11 December, in the magnificently decorated Ratstrinkstube, every day children from 6 to 12 years old can play, draw, create, sing and prepare for Christmas with the CELESTIAL WORKSHOP. Two daily appointments, at 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Each activity lasts about 90 ‘.

From 01 to 17 December, from Monday to Friday, in Schwabinger, there will be many activities such as puppet theater, crafts, storytelling and clowns for young visitors. Free admission from 3pm to 4pm.

From 01/12 to 10/12, at CHRISTKINDLPOSTAMT the post office of the Christmas market, in the passage towards the courtyard (Prunkhof) of the town hall on Marienplatz, the letters for the Child Jesus will be taken over. Appointment from 12:00 to 18:00.
