That the onion could have beneficial properties is well known. Among the many things, it is good for the heart, for bones, cleanses and is a food suitable for diabetics. Of course, better not to abuse it, especially before a gallant meeting!
That it could be the protagonist of a great party in Switzerland, dedicated to it, is, however, less known.

Every year, on the fourth Monday of November, the so-called Zibelemarit (Bern Onion Market) takes place in the Switzerland city, a large international fair dedicated to the onions. Over 50 tons of the vegetables are offered in all tastes and all sauces; from garlands, to braids, to real figures and onion sculptures!

The Onion Market is located in the upper part of the historic center of Bern. You will find around a hundred stalls set up by local farmers, especially from the Lake Freiburg district.

Over the years, the event has taken on the connotations of a popular festival. So, next to the inevitable onions, you can buy winter vegetables, nuts and many other gastronomic products. And, again, textiles, jewelry, ceramics and toys.

HOW TO GET

Anyone wishing to use the plane, keep in mind the small number of direct connections to the airport. A valid solution can be the nearby EuroAirport, an international airport with excellent connections to the main European and non-European destinations.

From the EuroAirport, you reach Berne in about 80 minutes with Intercity and Eurocity Buses and Trains.

BERN ONION MARKET 2025 TIMETABLES AND PROGRAM

The program includes a series of events and activities, including the Battle of the Sugared Almonds, particularly popular with young people. The parties and stalls are set up along the main and secondary streets of the upper historic center, in the Waisenhausplatz and in the Bundesplatz.

The so-called Bern Zibelemarit starts at 06:00 in the morning and ends at 18:00. Among the most anticipated moments is certainly the Battle of the Confetti, at 16:00. The program is completed by a series of events and after-parties that surround the event, organized in numerous venues in the city including ISC, Bierhübeli, Circle Club, L’Ovestino.
