Guindais Funicular from Porto da Ribeira to Batalha. Route, tickets

Guindais Funicolar

With over 100 years of history behind it, the ancient Guindais Funicular is more than just a means of transport.

Built in 1891, it connects the Ribeira district, one of the most evocative and fascinating of the city, with Batalha in a couple of minutes. The latter, on a hill, offers an extraordinary panorama, and spectacular views of the Douro and the Dom Luiz I bridge.

Despite having an ancient history, however, the funicular was short-lived. Inaugurated in 1891, it was closed two years later due to a serious accident. It took more than 100 years for the funicular to reopen in 2004.
Currently, the Porto funicular is under concession to the Municipality together with the Ribeira lift.
