Public transport is the best solution for getting around Zagreb. The transport is managed by the Croatian Zagrebački električni tramvaj (ZET) through buses, trams and a funicular.
The car is not recommended. Especially if the city should be your only holiday destination.
SLJEME CABLE CAR
The new Sljeme cable car connects Gračansko dolje with the top of Sljeme, passing through Brestovac where the intermediate station is located.
Along the way, which rises up to 754 meters high, you will have a truly wonderful view over the whole city.
It operates every day from approximately 09:30 to 18:30.
The one-way ticket costs 75kn for adults and 50kn reduced. Round trips cost 125 and 75 kn respectively.
TRAM
With over 100 years of life, the tram is one of the most beloved means, and used, to move to Zagreb.
In the city, 15 daytime running lines are operating, with frequencies between the 5 and the 10 minutes. The tram connects, in a capillary way, downtown and suburban neighborhoods. Moreover, most of the stops are served by two lines, allowing easy interchanges.
After the 23:00, night service is active. During the night, the 31, 32, 33 and 34 lines circulate, with frequencies from 30 to 40 minutes.
GETTING AROUND ZAGREB BY BUS
Buses are in service from early morning to late evening. There are over 110 urban and interurban lines that allow you to move to Zagreb in the center, suburbs and neighboring areas.
By bus you can get anywhere, including the Central Railway Station and the international airport. The latter is served by the 290 line.
Buses operate every day, including Sundays and holidays.
As for the trams, after midnight the night service is guaranteed by 4 lines:
- 116, Ljubljanca – Podsused Most.
- 172, Zagreb (Črnomerec) – Zaprešić.
- 212, Dubec – Sesvete.
- 268, Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor – Velika Gorica.
TICKETS
The Capital transport system is based on a tariff zone system. Generally, to travel in Zagreb it is sufficient to buy tickets for only one area. From the outskirts and the more distant areas, you will have to buy tickets for two or more areas.
Keep in mind that there are single tickets from only one area. To cover two areas, you will have to buy two tickets; the first must be validated as soon as you get on the vehicle and the second one when you pass a zone. For example, if you want to move from the airport to the center, you will have to buy two tickets.
Tickets are available for one single travel by bus or tram from 30, 60 or 90 minutes, at the cost, respectively, of 4.00, 7.00 and 10.00 kunas. They are valid only on day-time lines and must be purchased externally, at machines or at newsstands and qualified operators.
On night lines, the 15.00 HRK rate per person is always applied.
Single-ride tickets can be purchased, even on board the vehicle. In this case, by day or by night, the 15.00 HRK rate per person will always be applied.
The ticket for a ride by funicular costs 5.00 kunas instead. It is valid exclusively on this vehicle, and is purchased at the entrance to the Funicular.
Those who plan to travel to Zagreb by public transport on a frequent basis will find the season tickets affordable.
The Daily ticket costs 30.00 HRK and offers unlimited access to all ZET vehicles throughout the day. It can also be purchased on board, without extra charge.
They exist, then, subscriptions from 3, 7 and 15 days. They are, respectively, 70, 150 and 200 HRK and can be purchased at merchants and newsstands.
Remember to always validate your tickets before using the vehicle. If you were to move to Zagreb in two areas, you will have to validate a ticket as soon as you board the vehicle, and the second ticket when you pass the fare zone.
