Zadar

Welcome to the elected city of the European Best Destination 2016!

The Capital of Fun of the Adriatic, as defined by the “Times”, is a city that will conquer you from the first glance, a splendid union between past and present. The city boasts a historical and cultural heritage of the first order: everywhere there are, and well impressed, the testimonies of the past, and, despite the devastations suffered, the city has always been able to recover.

Today, Zadar, is one of the most vital centers of Dalmatia, especially during the summer, where, unmissable, are organized, cultural events, concerts and festivals. Beautiful, evocative and wonderful, Zadar has been awarded by a selected jury of experts in the field, like BEST EUROPEAN DESTINATION 2016. One more reason to spend a holiday exploring the city, and especially the surrounding area between islands, Natural Parks and National Parks.

HOW TO GET TO ZADAR

Zadar

PLANE

The Croatian city has a small airport, located in Zemunik, about 8km from the city. Air traffic is rather limited. All year round, Croatia Airlines guarantees two weekly flights from Zagreb; for the rest, the connections are concentrated exclusively in the summer period.

The Croatian local transport company Liburnija Zadar connects the airport to the city center. Buses leave from the Arrivals Terminal, about an hour after the Croatia Airlines flight has landed. The single-fare ticket costs 25,00kn and includes baggage transport. The first ride leaves from the airport (platform 8), from Monday to Saturday at 05:35; from the bus terminal in the city (Liburnska obala), first race, from Monday to Saturday, at 05:30.

ZADAR – SPLIT CONNECTIONS

Anyone wishing to reach the city can, alternatively, arrive at the airport of Split, and, from here, use the bus to get around the city of Dalmatia.

The bus takes from 150 minutes to 4 hours, depending on the time and route taken (those that cross the coastal stretch, of course, take longer). The ticket, regardless of the company, is between 85kn and 100kn (around 10€). Here are the three companies that manage the Split-Zadar route and vice versa:

You could also consider the alternative of getting to Split and rent the car to reach Zadar. In this way, you will have the opportunity to discover also the wonderful surrounding areas.

SHIP

Get in Zadar by boat

From the Port of Ancona, in Italy, from June to September, Jadrolinija, makes direct connections, by sea, with the port of Zadar. The crossing takes about 7 hours. Alternatively, you can reach the port of Split (from Ancona, Bari or Brindisi) and then reach Zadar.

CAR

From Italy, taking Venice as a reference, you have to travel about 470 kilometers to get to Zadar, of which, about 310 of highway. From Munich (Germany), there are more kilometers to go through 700, crossing the A8 and A1. From Vienna, they are just over 600 kilometers and from Prague, over 900. Remember to buy the motorway vignette in case of crossing of Slovenia and Austria.

The Croatian road section, being mostly coastal, runs slowly. Be careful and be cautious especially in the evening: in these areas the signs and lighting leave a lot to be desired.

TRAIN

The central railway station is well connected to the most important cities in Croatia, a little less with destinations across the border. From the main European destinations, on average, two or more changes are required to arrive at their destination. Taking into account the fact that trains are anything but frequent and efficient, we recommend this vehicle only if you intend to visit the hinterland. The official website of the Croatian Railways, moreover, it is not very usable.
