NDSM WHARF, or Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, was one of the best-known shipyards in all of Europe.
The industrial area reached its peak in the 60s and 70s before starting a phase of decline which culminated in 1984 with its official closure.
Since then there have been nothing left but abandoned warehouses and warehouses.
Expo ’98 and careful redevelopment work have given new life to the entire area, transforming it into an evocative and rather singular place, a true point of reference for street art, a true artists’ neighborhood in Amsterdam.
The old warehouses and containers remained in their place, perfectly clean and ready to shine in a new light thanks also to the intervention of professional writers.
The flooring is the same as years ago, when cranes and shipbuilding passed by.
HOW TO GET TO AMSTERDAM NDSM WHARF
The so-called artists’ quarter is located on the banks of the IJ river in the Amsterdam Noord area.
The neighborhood is easily accessible by public transport.
Arriving by ferry is undoubtedly the most fascinating way. Every day there are frequent direct connections to Amsterdam Centraal train station with Line F4. You can use normal GVB tickets.
The journey takes approximately 15 minutes.
Alternatively, by bus with lines 391, 394 and N94. The bicycle, the Dutch’s favorite vehicle, is an excellent solution that will allow you to get around the entire neighborhood without problems.
WHAT TO DO AND SEE
Graffiti and beautiful murals adorn the entire area of Amsterdam NDSM Wharf. The blow-up of Anne Frank is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and photographed works and which more than all embodies the “new course” of this area.
The STRAAT Museum displays more than 160 street art works by at least 150 artists, housed throughout the approximately 8000 m2 of the warehouse.
Every month, on set weekends, the largest flea market in Europe awaits you in the grandhouse: IJ-Hallen. Generally open from 09:00 to 16:30, with an entrance fee of €6.
Art, music and lots of entertainment. There is no shortage of exceptional events all year round such as the renowned DGTL and the ADE Amsterdam Dance Event
At Noorderlicht you will find many live musical proposals such as jam sessions, folk artists, workshops and conferences.
