Avila is a small medieval jewel. It is enough to visit its wonderful walls to realize it.
The walls of Avila date back to the 12th century and were built to defend against attacks by enemies. The perfect conservation still impresses today, among the best examples in all of Spain and Europe.
The walls extend for a perimeter of approximately 2500 meters, following the circumference of the historic center. They have an average height of about 12 meters, a thickness of 3, 9 access doors and 87 towers (the ancient observation posts). The Cathedral, whose apse is even incorporated into the walls of Avila, is an integral part of the same, becoming in fact a real tower!
The heart of the historic center of Avila is enclosed within the walls.
The splendid walls and external churches were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

ACCESS DOORS
Puerta del Alcázar and Puerta del Carmen are the reference accesses for the walkway and visit the historic walls of Avila.
Alcazar is the most important access, not far from the splendid Cathedral. It is located on Calle don Gerónimos, near the Empark El Grande, Avila’s main car park. If you are coming by car, this is the most convenient entrance.
Northwest of the Puerta del Alcázar is the other entrance on Pl. Concepción Arenal, 1. Here is the Puerta del Carmen. The entrance is great for taking pictures and enjoying beautiful views of the city. A few steps from the door is the Line 1 bus stop.
TIMETABLES AND TICKETS WALLS OF AVILA 2024
It is possible to access the walls all year round, at the following times:
- From 22/03 to 30/06, from Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 20:00.
- From 01st July to 31st August. From Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 15:00 and from 17:00 to 23:00.
- From 01/09 to 21/10. From Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 20:00.
- From 22nd October to March 2025, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00. Closed on Mondays.
On December 24th and 31st, closing time is 3pm. Always closed on 25/12 and 01/01.
The entrance ticket costs €5 at the standard rate, and €3.5 reduced for those aged 13 to 18 and over 65. On Tuesdays, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm, entry is FREE from Door of the Alcázar.
