The island is far from the main tourist circuits. The relative “tranquility” is inevitably reflected in the difficulty in reaching Karpathos. The possible methods are exclusively by sea or by air.
The best way to reach Karpathos is undoubtedly by plane. The island has a small airport, located to the south, near the beautiful beach of Diakoftis. The airport, inaugurated in 1970, covers an area of 700 square meters, with only one small, duty-free interior and a couple of bars. With the exception of Olympic Air, active all year round, all carriers make direct connections only between June and September.

Athens is an excellent base for reaching the Greek island. The airport of the capital, in fact, is connected with the main European capitals and numerous destinations. If you can’t find a direct flight, stopping over in Athens is more than just an alternative.
From Karpathos airport it is preferable to travel by taxi, or, alternatively, by renting a car.
There are few ships that ply the shores of Karpathos. The service is guaranteed by Anek Lines, and by Blue Star Ferries. The first connects the port of Piraeus with the main islands of the Cyclades up to Rhodes, obviously also passing through Karpathos. Punctuality almost equal to zero, and rather long times, are a prerogative of this means of transport that passes, among other things, also in Santorini.
Blue Star Ferries is one of the most popular shipping companies in Greece. It guarantees a weekly connection from the port of Piraeus. The crossing takes almost a day, and tickets cost around €57.50 for a seat. As this is a rather demanding route, it is preferable to book well in advance in order to secure a cabin with a bed.
From Rhodes, however, it takes about 6 hours, with tickets starting at €22.50 per person.
