Obidos is a beautiful Portuguese village in Extremadura. Today it is one of the best preserved medieval citadels in the whole country.
A charming and evocative historical center, on which stands the marvelous medieval castle, which has been a National Monument since 2007.
Obidos Castle has rather ancient origins dating back to Roman times, between the eighth and ninth centuries. Today it stands in a privileged position, completely surrounded by the splendid medieval walls, which you can walk through in about an hour.
With a wonderful view of the village and the surrounding landscape, to say the least.
The Castle subsequently underwent several changes until it took on its current form. Another exclusivity of the place is the possibility of sleeping right inside the Obidos Castle … naturally at prices that are not exactly cheap!
Obidos Castle has been included in the list of the Seven Wonders of Portugal, an official list of the 7 most beautiful places in the country!

HOW TO GET TO OBIDOS CASTLE
The Castle can only be reached on foot, crossing the cobbled streets of the historic center.
From the main car park, cross the historic Porta da Vila, the medieval gate that gives access to the “white city”. After passing the door, cross Rua Direita along Rua Direita to arrive at your destination. Walk for about ten minutes until you reach the Castle
WHAT TO DO AND SEE SEE
The interior of the Castle is not to be visited. In fact, it houses a Pousada Historica (read below), which is the first Portuguese example of a hotel structure created inside a historic building!
Of the Fortress, the walls are the main attraction. Walking along the walls of the castle represents a moment of pure charm and suggestion… especially when the sunset begins and the sky is tinged with pastel shades. Contemplating the city and the surrounding landscape from the top of the hill is truly wonderful. And quite romantic!
Access to the area around the Castle is FREE, except for the period of the Medieval Festival. In this case, by opting to visit the event, you pay the entrance ticket of €7. More info from here.
SLEEPING IN THE CASTLE
The interior of the Castle, as mentioned, cannot be visited, unless … you decide to sleep. Inside, in fact, the Pousada Castelo de Obidos was created, a 4-star structure that combines the medieval charm of the fourteenth century with modern services.
All rooms at Pousada Castelo de Obidos are equipped with air conditioning and a fully equipped private bathroom. Some have stone walls, four-poster beds and hanging chandeliers.
A buffet breakfast is served each morning and the restaurant serves Portuguese specialties made with local products.
We organize excursions on foot, or on horseback, and during your stay you can visit the castle and admire the gardens and its historic architecture. The castle also boasts some seating areas with medieval paintings and armor.
