All the colors of… Sintra
They are the ones who will accompany you during your visit to this beautiful city, one of the favorite destinations for a trip “out of town” from the capital.
Lisbon, in fact, is just about thirty kilometers away.
A little gem that looks like it came out of a fairy tale. This is the case of its splendid historic center, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
And while remaining above all a “hit and run” destination, this lively city really has many attractions that deserve the right attention. Palazzo Pena is certainly one of the unmissable stops, together with the Castle.
The Quinta da Regaleira estate, on the other hand, offers unexpected views and shows the most mysterious aspect of this city.
So beautiful that it deserved the praise of Lord Byron, and, in the 1700s, the interest of the Portuguese royalty.
Lisbon-Portela International Airport is just 28 kilometers away. It is the busiest airport in Portugal with direct connections to the main European and non-European destinations.
From the airport, take the metro to the Lisbon-Oriente Station and, from here, take the train to Sintra. The train journey from Lisbon takes around 45 minutes.
By train you can arrive exclusively from the Portuguese capital. Those coming from Porto, the north and other destinations will inevitably have to stop in Lisbon. In addition to the Oriente Station, you can get there from the Lisboa-Rossio station, in the Baixa district.
If you are planning a simple day trip from Lisbon, it is preferable to buy the combined ticket TRAIN & BUS. This is a special ticket valid for travel on the trains of the Portuguese company Comboios de Portugal (CP) from Lisbon to Sintra and on all buses of the Scotturb network. In this world, with a single ticket, you can reach the Portuguese city and move between the main points of interest. All over the course of a whole day. The ticket costs € 16 per person.
Trains are quite frequent, with about 4/5 departures every hour, on weekdays. Frequencies that decrease during the weekend. If you plan to visit Sintra in a single day, it is preferable to arrive early in the morning, by 09.
The train station is just a few minutes’ walk from the center, and less than 10 minutes from the Palacio Nacional. In the immediate vicinity of the train station there is the parking of bus lines 403, 417, 418. Leaving the station, follow the signs for the Câmara Municipal de Sintra, in order to reach the station of the tourist bus 434, the best for visiting the city.
The Portuguese city is well connected to the rest of the country. The car is only a means to reach the city. Once you arrive, it is preferable to leave your car in one of the parking areas, outside the center, and travel on foot or by bus.
Keep in mind that Sintra is quite a popular destination, especially in summer, and finding parking at rush hour can be quite problematic.
