Anyone who thinks that a car is the only way to get around Menorca is making a big mistake. It is possible to tour the island and visit the main points of interest using the efficient public transport or, alternatively, by scooter and bike.
Transportes Menorca (TMSA) manages transport on the island. The company operates a fleet of 27 buses, for a total of 16 routes. The buses, which are quite efficient, are in service all year round, carrying over 1,300,000 passengers! They really are an excellent solution for getting around Menorca, at a low cost.
The main bus station is in Mahon, the capital. From here, numerous lines depart for the main points of interest on the island, including LINE 1 for Ciutadella, on the other side of the island.
Here are the lines that operate all year round, with the travel time for the entire journey:
Here is the list of other lines active from May to October:
Buses generally run from 6:00 am until 11:55 pm during the seasonal period (May-October).
Line 90 is a special bus that allows you to travel around Menorca by public transport even at night. The bus, called BUS NIT, runs from 22:30 to approximately 05:50.
Bus 90 connects the two co-lines of Sant Lluis. and Ciutadella. It also stops at Es Castell – Mahon/Est Marítima – Mahon/Est. de bus – Alaior/Centre – Es Mercadal – Ferreries – Plaza Pinos. The journey time is approximately 100 minutes. The frequency is 120’.
Ordinary tickets, valid for a single journey, can be purchased directly on board the vehicle, from the driver. Payment in cash for the exact amount is required. The price varies depending on the distance of the journey. It ranges from a minimum of €1.35 for the connection, for example, Mahon – Es Murtar or Sa Mesquida, to a maximum of €5.75 for a journey from the capital to Ciutadella, or vice versa, with Bus 14.
On night lines the price varies from a minimum of €2.50 to a maximum of €7 depending on the route.
For those who want to travel around Menorca by bus, with a certain frequency, you can save with the T-GENERAL card. The blue Card is available in the T10 (for ten journeys) and T40 (40 journeys) versions, each for three zones.
In this case, in fact, the fare system is based on the zones and the number of hops (the passage from one zone to another). The T10, with 0 hops (1 zone), costs €11.45; suitable for those who want to always stay in the same area. The T10 with 2 hops (3 zones) costs €35.30, and allows you to move without problems, in every part of the island. The T40 costs €32.65 for 1 zone, €61.50 for 2 zones and €100.85 for 3 zones.
By purchasing a valid travel ticket, you can use the WI-FI line available on all TMSA vehicles for FREE for 24 hours. Just connect to the “TMSA_WiFi” line and register for free.
Few people know that Menorca boasts an excellent cycling network. The bike is the ideal way to discover remote corners and places of the beautiful island. Thanks to TMSA, it is also possible to reach the other side of the island, without having to cross its main road (Me-1).
From Monday to Friday, in fact, an extra service is active exclusively on the EXPRESS 14 Mahon-Ciutadella line. The bikes will be placed on a special trailer, with a capacity of up to 14 bicycles. To use the service, a fee of €2.15 per bicycle is required and booking on the TMSA website 24 hours in advance is mandatory. The service is active exclusively from May to October with trips at 06:45, 13:00 and 15:25 from Mahon, and 08:00, 14:20 and 17:00 from Ciutadella.
The most convenient way to get around Menorca is definitely by car, which we recommend renting directly from the airport. Menorca GO! offers competitive prices, reliability and many services included. You can find two offices at Menorca airport and in Cala’n Forcat in Ciutadella.
Being an island, many tourists often tend to think that a scooter is the right choice. This statement is only partly true. If you want to reach the beaches exclusively, driving during the day, the choice of a two-wheeler is quite valid. This option, however, should be excluded if you want to travel in the evening and cover long distances. In fact, the roads are poorly lit and there are about 50km between the capital Mahon and Ciutadella. In our opinion, it could be quite dangerous.
The combined scooter-bus solution should not be excluded.
