Country you go, strangeness you find.
And, in this sense, Iceland and its capital are not used to strange and unusual things.
This is the case of the Icelandic Phallological Museum, a place where 275 penises of over 90 Icelandic animal species are displayed, some of which are now extinct.
An incredible collection, one of a kind, which since 2011 has been enriched by the presence of a human member, a kind legacy of an Icelandic citizen after his death.
The museum was founded in 1974 by a certain Sigurdur Hjartarson, a retired history professor, who since childhood had made no secret of this unusual passion… for collecting. As a child, in fact, he used a bull’s penis to whip cattle.

In 2012, the entire penis collection was inherited from father to son, housed in the city of Reykjavik.
The museum is located in Reykjavik, at Kalkofnsvegur 2, in the center and not far from the main points of interest.
With bus lines 1, 3, 6, 11, 12 and 13, you get off at the Lækjartorg A stop, and in a few minutes’ walk you will reach your destination.
At the Icelandic Phallological Museum you can contemplate penises of all shapes, weights, and sizes.
If size matters to you… you can admire the 170 cm penis (over 70kg) of a whale: numbers that would make anyone pale.
If you feel uncomfortable, try putting yourself in the shoes of a hamster: its 2mm penis is only visible with a magnifying glass!
At the Museum you can also admire a bull penis, wisely converted by the founder Sigurdur, into a walking stick!
Numerous unique items are also exhibited, such as lamps made of bull’s scrotum. Inside, an exhibition dedicated to folklore is set up.
The Museum is open every day, from Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 19:00.
The entrance ticket costs 2500 ISK per person (about €19).
