Travel again, and more. Pollute less.
With these premises, we are leaving the pandemic (or so it is hoped) behind us, towards a future marked by normality.
Off with the masks. Let’s go back to appreciating the little pleasures. But, above all, we rediscover the pleasure of traveling. The desire to discover new places, new cultures. All that has been lost in the past 2 years.
But let’s do it more consciously, paying maximum attention to sustainability.
We respect the environment.
Sustainable travel is possible.
Sustainability is a topic that has now entered our homes by law. In children’s schools. They already have incredible awareness. Something that is often lacking in the older generations and, above all, in the powerful and those who govern us.
Sustainable travel is possible. Right now.
To us who love to travel, the task of doing it in a sustainable way, with an eye to the environment. Each of us, in our own small way and in our daily gestures, can make a contribution. And he can do it even during a trip. By avoiding, for example, the use of cars or taxis, and always preferring public transport.
Generally, trains, subways, trams and trolley buses are always to be preferred (where possible) when traveling. Trains are the best for medium / long haul travel. Metro, tram and trolleybus for getting around the city and to cover short-haul distances.
These electric public transport vehicles have low emissions and release less CO2. This translates into better quality not only for the environment but also for the passenger.
Cruise ships are real monsters for the environment, with a devastating impact.
The plane, on the other hand, deserves a separate discussion, because it must be considered with reference to the distance, the number of passengers.
It must be said that the critical phase in terms of environmental impact is during take-off and landing.
Getting around on foot and by bike are the only totally zero-emission options.
Then there are the sharing solutions. Bikes, scooters and cars with this formula are the best for getting around, helping the environment.
Car sharing is an increasingly common practice in large cities. Especially if you have the right to leave the car in one of the various points of the city.
Obviously it’s just a provocation. Although it is known that the plane is a particularly polluting vehicle, it is utopian to think of its sunset in a short time.
And, equally unlikely, is the slogan of many environmentalists who invite you to travel only to nearby destinations.
Much better to cover a distance of over 1000 km by plane rather than by car: think of the traffic, the traffic jams, the air conditioning always on in these 1000 kilometers !!
Preferring the train to the plane instead, could be the best compromise. Not only in terms of environmental impact.
Last item on the agenda: travel on the road.
For years, literature and cinema have contributed to creating the myth of “on the road” travel. We let ourselves be seduced, bewitched.
I myself am part of this large group. Still, the car remains a great burden to the environment. And let’s also dispel the myth of zero impact electric cars: NOTHING MORE FALSE. With current production methods, an electric car that comes out of a factory pollutes much more than a diesel car (especially of the latest generation). This is because producing batteries today has a devastating impact on the environment because all harmful elements are released all at the same time.
So let’s get over it. For the sake of the environment and for the future.
Sustainable travel by car is not possible. And even more, getting around the city.
Traffic jams. Pollution. Parking lots.
We don’t need a car to travel and visit a place.
