It was 1854 when the first ferry service to Basel was inaugurated, at the initiative of the Basler Künstlergesellschaft. The ferry crossed the river at today’s Wettsteinbrücke Bridge.
More than 170 years have passed since then, and the charm of that crossing has remained virtually intact. Even today, you can admire the splendid city of Basel by crossing the Rhine.
Every day, four Rhine ferries (Rheinfähren) connect the two banks of Grossbasel and Kleinbasel, secured by a long metal cable.
A truly fascinating and evocative way to admire the Swiss city and travel from one bank of the city to the other.
The service is provided by Basel’s four ferries: the “Wilde Maa,” the “Leu,” the “Vogel Gryff,” and the “Ueli.” The “Leu” Münster offers the best view of Basel Cathedral.

The boats operate throughout the summer and, partially, during the winter.
Below are the updated routes and schedules of the four Rhine River ferries:
Of the four ferries of Basel, only the “St. Johann – Ueli” ferry is accessible and wheelchair accessible.
A single-ride ticket costs CHF 2 for adults and CHF 1 for children.
You can purchase tickets directly on the ferry or in advance at the tourist information desk at the Stadtcasino on Barfüsserplatz.
