Rijeka is a beautiful city in Croatia, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, in the Kvarner Bay
The third largest city in the country, by number of inhabitants, is an important university and archiepiscopal center. It boasts the presence of numerous, and important, religious buildings. Its port, is the most important, for freight traffic, of all Croatia.
During your vacation, you can admire beautiful buildings. The lively, and charming, riverfront and its Korzo. Some interesting museums. Not forgetting to bring home a Morčić, the typical jewel with the effigy of a dark brown head.
This is also the Croatian city of Carnival. The event, which takes place between January and March, reaches its peak between Ash Wednesday and Ash Wednesday. The parade is one of the highlights. The event is broadcast live by the main national televideo broadcasters.
HOW TO GET
PLANE
The plane is the best solution to reach the Croatian city. The international airport is about 25km away from the city. Alternatively, you can poster for the largest airport in Zagreb.
Rijeka International Airport is located on the island of Krk in the small village of Omišali. About 200,000 passengers pass through here every year.
Air traffic is concentrated mainly during the summer period. Many low cost airlines offer direct connections to some major European cities. By bus, taxi and car, you can easily reach your destination.
Zagreb airport is located just under 180 km from Rijeka. Main Croatian airport, it is connected with direct flights to many European cities.
Croatia Airlines, a national airline, offers convenient bus connections with the city. Every day, depending on the period, there is at least one connection with Rijeka. The bus takes about 2 hours to reach its destination. Alternatively, there is a daily connection managed by Pleso Prijevoz. The ticket costs 200kn for one way and 300kn for a round trip. Free for children under 6
CAR
It is preferable to take a trip coming from nearby Italy, Slovenia or Austria.
From Trieste, the distance is just 80 km. From Ljubljana, in Slovenia, it takes just under 2 hours to reach Rijeka. The distance from Vienna, on the other hand, is about 400 km. Keep in mind that the infrastructure in Croatia, despite recent improvements, is still being modernized.
BUS AND TRAIN
By bus you can reach Fiume from the main Croatian cities, Slovenia and Italy. The station is located downtown, near the Church in Trg Žabica. Autotrans is the reference partner for bus connections. It offers modern and comfortable vehicles at really cheap prices. On the Arriva group website, by booking in advance, you can get prices up to 30% off, and more.
From Zagreb it takes just over 2 hours to reach your destination. The ticket costs 88kn per person. From Split, on the other hand, it takes over 7 hours, with prices of 244kn per person.
Each person can carry a maximum of 2 pieces of luggage, with a weight not exceeding 24kg.
The railway network is not particularly efficient, which is why arriving by train is not the best option. Especially from international destinations.
