Mosque of Cordoba

The great Mosque of Cordoba (Mezquita) undoubtedly represents one of the greatest expressions of Islamic art in all of Spain.

A historical evolution that began way back in 784 AD. as a mosque and continued with the reconquista, when it was converted into the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Mary in Cordoba.
The last major expansion was carried out in the 17th century when a nave was added.

Admiring it today, you can appreciate its architecture, a perfect combination of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. A real jewel, a UNESCO world heritage site, together with the historic center and the nearby Medina Azahara.

The Mezquita is certainly the monument par excellence of Cordoba and all of Andalucia. A more than valid reason that pushes anyone to visit the beautiful Spanish city, even for a simple trip out of town.

HOW TO GET

The Great Mosque is located in the historic center, at C. Cardenal Herrero, 1. The place is easily reachable on foot from the central station, with a walk of about 20 minutes.
All major monuments are located a short distance from the Mezquita.

For those who prefer to use public transport, lines 3 and 16 pass through here.

WHAT TO SEE AT THE GREAT MOSQUE OF CORDOVA

The dimensions are undoubtedly one of the elements that immediately impress visitors. Equally impressive is the Prayer Hall, truly wonderful with its naves with columns and two-tone horseshoe arches.

Palm trees, olive trees and cypresses mingle among the orange trees in the fascinating Patio de los Naranjos, a splendid courtyard, once the true center of Islamic life in the Caliphate.
Don’t miss the Bell Tower, which at 54 meters represents the highest point in the whole city.
