Budapest Central Market. Opening hours, how to arrive

Budapest Central Market

An unmissable place where nothing is missing. Meat, sweets, spices, souvenirs, refreshment points… The Budapest Central Market (Nagycsarnok) known as one of the obligatory stops during a vacation in Budapest. That it is, also, only for a Weekend.

The Central Market in Budapest is not just a place teeming with stalls, suitable for bargaining. First of all, it is one of the largest indoor markets in Europe.
It is housed, among other things, in a building of the 1897 that, thanks to the restoration of the centenary, have brought it back to its former glory. It is also ideal for stopping for lunch. On the first floor, in fact, you will find many bars and restaurants in which to stop. The value for money is really good.

Not just a simple market. Here, there is also the story of a city and an entire people.
A beautiful place to see, with the products, sometimes, arranged as real works of art. On the ground floor, you will find many booths for your purchases. Genuine and fresh products.
In the basement, however, you will find the fish market and a supermarket.

Also recommended for those who do not like the markets, even just for a simple walk.

WHAT TO SEE AND WHAT TO BUY AT THE MARKET

Tokaji, or Tokaj, is one of the most famous and appreciated Hungarian wines. At the Central Market Hall in Budapest you might find a few bottles to take home as souvenirs.
Spices, and especially paprika, are quite popular at this market.

Among the unmissable products is of course Langos, a true culinary specialty of the place. It is a sort of fried pancake or focaccia made with yeast, water, flour and salt. Excellent both in the savoury version (the best) and in the sweet version. You can taste it at one of the many stands on the upper floor of the Market, even if the prices are much higher than elsewhere!

Given the location and ease of access, we recommend reaching the location on foot or by public transport. A private car is not recommended.
