Budavári Sikló is a railway funicular that connects the lower part of Budapest with the Buda hill and the Castle. Hence the name of the Budapest Castle Hill Funicular.
Officially inaugurated in March 1870, the Budapest Funicular is not a simple means of city transport. Due to its characteristics and its historical-artistic value, in 1987 it was included by UNESCO in the world heritage of humanity. Today it can be considered in all respects as a real attraction of the Capital.
Its route develops in only 95 meters but with slopes that exceed 50. The view it offers is truly unique. Among the various features, the presence of two pedestrian bridges that pass above it.
Gellért and Margit are the names of the two carriages. Each can carry up to 25 people. The journey takes just 90 seconds. The funicular is operated by BKK (Budapesti Kozlekedes Cozponti), the company that manages public transport in the capital.
The Budapest Funicular consists of only 2 stations. The lower station is located in Adam Clark Square, near the Chain Bridge (Buda side). The entrance is just past the square on the left of the Gallery. It can be reached by public transport with buses 16, 105, 178, 210, 216, 916.
The upper station of the Funicular is located between the magnificent Castle and the Sándor Palace.
The Buda Castle Funicular operates every day, including holidays, from Monday to Sunday, from 08:00 to 22:00. The funicular is closed only on Mondays during odd weeks for routine maintenance.
The frequency of the rides varies from a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 10 minutes.
To ride the Funicular you need to buy a specific ticket at a cost of 5000Ft (13.61€) for adults and 2000Ft (5.44€) for children aged 3 to 14. The ticket allows a return trip on the Castle Funicular. There is also a special Family Ticket (Családi Napijegy) for two adults and up to 3 children, at a cost of 12,000 forints (32.66€).
Tickets can be purchased up to 10 minutes before closing, at the ticket office located at the entrance to the station. Alternatively, you can buy tickets directly online and through the official BKK app.
Please note that all normal transport tickets (metro, tram, bus), hourly tickets lasting 24 hours or more and the normal Budapest City Cards ARE NOT VALID FOR ACCESS TO THE FUNICULAR!
