Here are the practical info, and everything you need to know, to drive in Bulgaria without problems.

As always, it is recommended to follow some basic and universal rules.

BASIC RULES TO DRIVE IN BULGARIA

In Bulgaria you drive to the right and overtake on the left. Always respect the safety distance.
Always give priority to pedestrians who cross or are about to cross a road; even if there are no pedestrian crossings on the ground.

The entry into the European Union has represented a turning point for the country, in particular as regards infrastructures. Before 2000, Bulgaria had about 50% of unpaved roads. Only in 2015, about 20 thousand kilometers of national roads and highways, 98% is paved! The goal is to improve road connections with neighboring countries, and internal connections connecting Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas and Varna.

DOCUMENTS TO DRIVE IN BULGARIA

Driving license, registration certificate and valid insurance certificate. If you are driving a vehicle that is not your own, we recommend that you take a DELEGATION TO CONDUCT. This is a delegation of the vehicle owner with an authenticated signature.

VEHICLE EQUIPMENT

It is mandatory to have the following items in the car, under penalty of payment of penalties:

ROADS AND SIGNS

The motorway network is marked with the letter A, followed by a progressive number. A billboard on green and white character marks the Bulgarian highway. Highways and major roads are marked on blue-and-white signs. In any case, these are important arteries. They are marked by the letter I followed by a sequential number from 1 to 9. To these, we add the I-18, known as Ring Road. It is a ring road, which passes around the capital.

Generally, the indications in the main roads and in the motorway sections are written in Latin. A good part of the indications, however, are in Cyrillic. Without a navigator it could really be a problem.

Pay close attention to driving away from cities and rural roads, due to poor road conditions and infrastructure. Also, do not underestimate the guidance of the Bulgarians, sometimes reckless and without respecting the signs. On many roads, accidents are quite frequent!
