Bratislava. How to get from Vienna Prague Budapest by train

Bratislava

A small and charming historical center, made of paved streets, characteristic squares and really evocative views. A perfect mix of different cultures and eras, including beautiful architecture. The capital of Slovakia stands as one of the cities of the East to be discovered.

A city that is an invitation to get lost in its streets. Really magical places and hidden corners. Between palaces and statues, you can take wonderful walks. Although the Old City may seem small indeed, Bratislava will really conquer you.

HOW TO GET TO BRATISLAVA

PLANE

The MR Štefánik Airport, also known as Letisko Milana Rastislava Štefánika, is the main airport of all Slovakia. It is less than 10 kilometers north-east of the capital. It has only one terminal but is able to accommodate about 5 million passengers a year.

GETTING TO BRATISLAVA FROM VIENNA

Given the rather short distance from Vienna, many decide to visit the Slovakian capital during their holiday. In this sense, the train represents a convenient and rather economical solution, especially in the case of a day trip.

Every day, from early morning until around 11pm, there are connections every 30 minutes between Vienna Central Station and Petržalka (a 15-minute walk from the centre). The journey takes just under an hour. With a Euregio Ticket, at a cost of €18 (€9 for children), you can make a return trip, and use public transport in Bratislava for the whole day!

Alternatively, Flixbus and Slovak Lines are the solutions for those who prefer to use the bus.

GETTING TO BRATISLAVA FROM BUDAPEST

It takes about two and a half hours to get there from Budapest by EC train. Every day, from 05:30, approximately 8 direct connections are guaranteed from Budapest, for a total of 5 intermediate stops. The adult ticket starts from €38.40 per person. By purchasing tickets in advance you can ensure the most affordable fares.

CAR

Bratislava can be easily reached by car, thanks to the excellent motorway network that reaches directly into the city. The road system throughout Slovakia is modern and efficient. From Austria, Slovakia, Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary, you can reach your destination without ever leaving the motorway, or almost never.

Bratislava can be reached from Vienna in just over an hour and just 80 kilometres. The city is almost close to the border with Austria. From Budapest, you have to travel 200 kilometers; Prague is just over 300 kilometers away, and Munich is about 520, passing through Salzburg.

Anyone traveling by car must remember to always purchase the mandatory vignette when crossing Austrian, Slovenian and Swiss motorways.
