Amphitheater of Capua

One of the most important testimonies left by the Roman Empire in Campania.
The second largest Roman amphitheater in the entire world!

In other contexts, these two elements would be enough to decree the global success of the site.
Unfortunately, the reality of the facts is very different and, in fact, the Amphitheater of Capua has never received the right attention, often showing a state of real abandonment. A situation that in recent years seems to be moving along the “right tracks”.

Built between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, the Amphitheater of Capua (also known as the Campania Amphitheater) is located in Santa Maria Capua Vetere in what was once ancient Capua.
In this arena, in the presence of almost 60,000 spectators, the most incredible shows were staged. Here there was also an important school where gladiators were trained, to whom an interesting museum is dedicated today.

The site’s decline coincided with the fall of the Roman Empire and subsequent devastation by the Vandals and Saracens.
Even if vandalised, its majesty remains unchanged and the visit is truly enjoyable especially due to the very minimal presence of tourists.

HOW TO GET

The Amphitheater is located in the small town of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, in Piazza Adriano, just over 10km from Caserta.
It can be easily reached by car, following the SS700 for a good part of the journey.

The site can also be reached by train. The station is located a few minutes walk from the Arena. From Naples, passing through Caserta, it takes about 45 minutes and prices start at €4 per person. From Caserta it takes about 10′; the ticket costs €1.30 per person
The service is active from 06:00 to approximately 20:00 with runs every hour.

WHAT TO SEE

Of the external part, the arena floor is notable, still well preserved. Here, between the wooden planks and the sand, the fights between the gladiators took place.
Even more spectacular are the underground rooms, perfectly preserved. Moving through this underground labyrinth, it seems that time has stopped…

Attached to the Amphitheater of Capua is the small Gladiator museum where you can admire relics and reconstructions.

As mentioned, the site has never enjoyed great tourist importance, which is why it is never crowded. You can walk around it in complete tranquility and enjoy all the magic of this place.
