Here is some valuable information to drive in Netherlands.
As always, we recommend that you follow some basic and universal rules: always respect speed limits. Avoid driving in the Netherlands after taking alcohol: the limit is 0.05%, decreased to 0.02 for novice drivers. Zero tolerance throughout the country. Controls, especially on the motorway, are quite frequent. The fines, however, very high. In general, they also provide for the confiscation of the vehicle.
In the event of an infraction, you can pay the fine on the spot. Do not forget the receipt, of course.
BASIC RULES TO DRIVE IN NETHERLANDS
In Holland, drive to the right and overtake on the left. Remember to always respect the safety distance.
It is always necessary to give priority to pedestrians who cross or are about to cross a road; even if there are no pedestrian crossings on the ground.
Remember, moreover, to always give priority to cyclists, especially in the city. Throughout the country, the bike is a particularly used vehicle! If you had to crash with a bike, except in special cases, you will always be wrong!
In the event of an accident, YOU MUST ALWAYS STOP and provide assistance, where necessary. It is always preferable, on both sides, to sign the friendly statement and call the authorities.
The Lijnbus writing on the ground, or simply a bus, indicates a preferential lane. Like the bicycle lanes, generally of reddish color, they must be avoided by motorists.
DOCUMENTS TO DRIVE IN NETHERLANDS
Driving license, registration certificate and valid insurance certificate. If you are driving a vehicle that is not your own, we recommend that you take a DELEGATION TO CONDUCT. This is a delegation of the vehicle owner with an authenticated signature. It is not mandatory.
To drive mopeds up to 50, you must have at least 15 years; for higher engines, the minimum age of 18 is required.
VEHICLE EQUIPMENT
The seat belts must be fastened to all seats, front and back (if any).
On motorcycles and mopeds that exceed the 25 km/h, the helmet is mandatory for driver and passenger.
In cars it is mandatory to have a red reflecting triangle. Self-reflective waistcoat and first aid case, are recommended.
ROADS AND SIGNS
The motorway network is particularly extensive and efficient and allows you to reach the main Dutch destinations. It is the highway with the highest density per km2 in the world.
The car is a great way to get around the country. On the other hand, the extension of the territory itself, allows large city transfers in a short time.
The car, on the other hand, should be avoided to get around town. Better to opt for the comfortable public transport of the city.
The motorways connect the country in a capillary way, and are extremely busy. Especially in certain routes, at peak times. A letter followed by a progressive white number on a red background identifies a motorway called Autosnelweg.
The motorway is free, with the exception of the Westerscheldetunnel and Dordtse Kil tunnels.
A sore point is the price of fuel, among the highest in all of Europe.
SPEED LIMITS
Speed limits may be subject to variation. Sometimes, on certain stretches, the speed may vary depending on the lanes in operation and, even, depending on the time. Unless otherwise indicated, the general limits on Dutch roads are as follows:
50 km/h in the city.
80 and 100 km/h outside population centers.
130 km/h on the highway.
DRIVE IN NETHERLANDS WITH CHILDREN
Children under 135cm, must always be secured to the seats, adjusted to their weight, and approved in compliance with the minimum safety requirements. The belts, of course, must be well connected. Children under the age of 3 can only travel on appropriate child seats approved for their age.
Always remember that these rules are necessary to guarantee the safety of your children. Apply them strictly.
