Beautiful Slovenia is a fascinating and evocative land that invites everyone to be explored. Here is all the practical information for driving in Slovenia.
As always, it is recommended to follow some basic and universal rules.
Always respect the speed limits. A fundamental principle for safety and, also, for your pockets; you will avoid fines. If you were given a fine, you can pay it directly to the agent, or you will have 8 days. After this period, tougher penalties will apply.
In case of an accident, YOU MUST ALWAYS STOP and give assistance; it is important, however, not to hinder circulation. We also remind you that it is MANDATORY to provide your personal details.
BASIC RULES FOR DRIVING IN SLOVENIA
In Croatia you drive on the right and overtake on the left. Always respect the safety distance. Priority must always be given to pedestrians crossing or about to cross a road; even if there are no pedestrian crossings on the ground
The network is quite efficient and modern.
DOCUMENTS FOR DRIVING IN SLOVENIA
Driving license, vehicle registration certificate and valid insurance certificate. For those who are driving a vehicle that is not their own, we recommend that you obtain a DELEGATION TO DRIVE. This is a proxy from the vehicle owner with an authenticated signature. It is not mandatory.
VEHICLE EQUIPMENT
Seat belts must be fastened on all seats.
It is mandatory to equip your car with a reflective vest, triangle, and spare bulbs. The presence of a first aid kit is recommended, but not mandatory.
From November 15th to March 15th, it is mandatory to travel with winter tires or 4Season (M + S) or have snow chains on board. They must be mounted, when indicated by a special sign.
The helmet is mandatory on all motorcycles and mopeds.
ROADS AND SIGNS
Družba za avtoceste v Republiki Sloveniji (DARS), is the company that has been managing the Slovenian motorway system since 1993. An efficient and modern network, of which motorways and expressways are the backbone and crossroads for the rest of Europe.
In Slovenia there are 5 motorways that pass through the main cities and the most important places in the country. Ljubljana is the real point of reference for motorway connections.
Motorways are identified by the letter A (Avtocesta) followed by a progressive number from 1 to 5. The sign is in white on a green background.
Expressways (Hitra cesta) are freeways, identified by the letter H followed by a number. In this case the sign has a blue background and white font.
To drive in Slovenia on roads and motorways, it is mandatory to purchase a special sticker, or badge, to be displayed on the car’s windshield. More info from this link.
SPEED LIMITS
Unless otherwise indicated, speed limits are as follows:
- 50 km/h on urban roads.
- 90 km/h outside built-up areas.
- 110 km/h on motorways.
- 130 km/h on motorways.
The limit is decreased by 10 km/h if the driver is under 24 years old.
DRIVING IN SLOVENIA WITH CHILDREN
Children under 1.50m tall will travel in a child seat or with safety belts suitable for their size.
Children under the age of 12 cannot travel on motorcycles and mopeds.
ALCOHOL
IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN to drive if you have drunk alcohol.
If you are under 21, you will usually not be able to hire anything before driving!
If you are over 21, the legal BAC is 0.05% (barely a glass of beer).
In the event of an accident and infringement, the detection test will always be carried out.
