Tančící dům is the name of one of the most original and incredible buildings that you can admire in Prague. Literally it means “Dancing House”, inspired by the two great dancers Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers, represented (metaphorically) by the Stone Tower and the Glass Tower.
Just like their dance step, the two towers meet, creating a truly magical and evocative union. A building, now home to the Dutch National Offices, which blends perfectly with the surrounding architecture.
The Dancing House stands in the center, where, years ago, there was a building bombed during the war, in February 1945. In the 1990s the land was bought by the Nationale Nederlanden who entrusted the construction project to the architect Vlado Milunic and to the designer Frank O. Gehry. Since 1996 it has been possible to admire this extraordinary building.
In 1996, the year of its inauguration, the building was awarded the Design of the Year award by the well-known American magazine “Times”.
Today, it represents one of the unmissable stops on holiday in Prague.
Tančící dům is located in the city center, in Nové Město, in the Prague 2 area. The building is easily accessible by public transport. A few minutes’ walk away is the Jiráskovo náměstí stop for Tram lines 5, 9, 12, 15, 17, 20, 98 and 99. Alternatively, you can opt for buses 176 and 910.
The truly unique architecture is a wedding invitation to admire the outside and take great selfies. Inside, however, there are some offices, a bar and a restaurant with an adjoining panoramic terrace (not exactly cheap).
The building also hosts several temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
