Zurich Funiculars

Zurich funiculars are a practical way to get around the city

There are two funiculars in Zurich. UBS Polybahn, connects Central Square with the ETH Zürich building, home of the Eidgenössisches Polytechnikum. With a length of just 176 meters, it is more of a symbol than a means of transport itself. The funicular is mainly used by students, on their way to the Polytechnic, however, from the terrace of the ETH, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city.

The drive from Central Square takes a couple of minutes, but it’s well worth the drive to enjoy the beautiful view at the top.

The Polybahn funicular is open every day at the following times:

  • Monday to Friday, from 06:30 to 21:00
  • Saturday, from 07:30 to 21:00
  • Sundays and holidays, from 09:00 to 21:00

Seilbahn Rigiblick, on the other hand, is the funicular located to the north-east of the city. It has an extension of 385 meters, and a total of 5 stops. Rigiblick, on the Zürichberg hill, is the terminus. The blue and white funicular is connected to lines 9 and 10 of the Tram.

It has a frequency of about 6 minutes and a travel time of about 5 minutes. It is used by over 600,000 passengers every year.

The funicular runs every day, from Monday to Sunday, at the following times:

  • from 06:00 to midnight, departures every 6 minutes.
  • from 05:00 to 06:00 and from midnight to 01:00 at night, departures on request.

To travel on the USB Polybhan you can buy a single-journey ticket at a cost of 1.20CHF.

On the Seilbahn Rigiblick funicular, operated by ZVV, you use common Zurich public transport tickets. Among these, the cheapest is the ZVV Einzelbillett ticket AB which allows you to make a movement in zone 110 within 30′ of validation. It costs 2.80CHF per person per adult, and 2.40CHF per children.
