Zurich Funiculars

Zurich funiculars are a practical way to get around the city

There are two funiculars in Zurich. UBS Polybahn, connects Central Square with the ETH Zürich building, home of the Eidgenössisches Polytechnikum. With a length of just 176 meters, it is more of a symbol than a means of transport itself. The funicular is mainly used by students, on their way to the Polytechnic, however, from the terrace of the ETH, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city.

The drive from Central Square takes a couple of minutes, but it’s well worth the drive to enjoy the beautiful view at the top.

The Polybahn funicular is open every day at the following times:

  • Monday to Friday, from 06:30 to 21:00
  • Saturday, from 07:30 to 21:00
  • Sundays and holidays, from 09:00 to 21:00

Seilbahn Rigiblick, on the other hand, is the funicular located to the north-east of the city. It has an extension of 385 meters, and a total of 5 stops. Rigiblick, on the Zürichberg hill, is the terminus. The blue and white funicular is connected to lines 9 and 10 of the Tram.

It has a frequency of about 6 minutes and a travel time of about 5 minutes. It is used by over 600,000 passengers every year.

The funicular runs every day, from Monday to Sunday, at the following times:

  • from 06:00 to midnight, departures every 6 minutes.
  • from 05:00 to 06:00 and from midnight to 01:00 at night, departures on request.
