Targu Mures, Transylvania. How to arrive by plane, car, train

Targu Mures

In the heart of Transylvania, lies this quiet city, an intermediate destination between Brasov and Cluj Napoca.

A town of which the beautiful Medieval Fortress (Cetatea Medievala), the Ascension Cathedral and the Palace of Culture remain impressed.

Hardly this could be the exclusive destination of your holiday but, during a trip on the road in Transylvania, Targu Mures is a must. Even if only for a day.

HOW TO GET TO TARGU MURES

PLANE

The city is served by a small international airport, about 14 km from the city. The connections are guaranteed almost exclusively by Low Cost Wizz Air, which flies from Barcelona, Budapest, Dortmund, London-Luton, Madrid, Milan, Paris and Rome.
From the airport, by minibus you get to the center.

In our opinion, it is better to opt for the international airport Avram Iancu, which serves the city of Cluj Napoca, and is located about 115km northwest of Targu Mures.
It is the most important airport in all of Transylvania, as well as the second busiest airport in Romania.
It is well connected, with direct flights, to many European destinations.

From the airport, it is preferable rent a car and reach the city. Take the E81, direction Turda, and then continue towards Târgu Mures.

Alternative, less practical, is to reach the center of Cluj Napoca by bus and, subsequently, continue by train to the city.

TRAIN

Race Târgu Mureş is the main station serving the Romanian city. Inaugurated in the early years of the ‘900, it is located in the center, easily accessible on foot.
The connections are guaranteed with Cluj Napoca, Brasov and the Capital, often with IR trains, which make all the stops along the way. Frequencies and journey times are quite long, in line with Trans-Rail transport.

CAR

Anyone wishing to arrive by car will have to take into account the long journey times, and the roads crossed. Indeed, Targu Mures is not served by the motorway network.
From Bucharest, to the south, it takes almost six hours to cross the 350 kilometers away.
Beyond the border, Budapest, in Hungary, is 560 kilometers, passing through the nearby Cluj Napoca.
From Vienna, however, the distance is about 830 kilometers.
In any case, it is quite unlikely to budget a direct trip to this city.
