Rijeka

History and traditions in the Capital of Culture 2020.

Rijeka is a beautiful city in Croatia, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, in the Kvarner Bay
The third largest city in the country, by number of inhabitants, is an important university and archiepiscopal center. It boasts the presence of numerous, and important, religious buildings. Its port, is the most important, for freight traffic, of all Croatia.

During your vacation, you can admire beautiful buildings. The lively, and charming, riverfront and its Korzo. Some interesting museums. Not forgetting to bring home a Morčić, the typical jewel with the effigy of a dark brown head.

This is also the Croatian city of Carnival. The event, which takes place between January and March, reaches its peak between Ash Wednesday and Ash Wednesday. The parade is one of the highlights. The event is broadcast live by the main national televideo broadcasters.

The plane is the best solution to reach the Croatian city. The international airport is about 25km away from the city. Alternatively, you can poster for the largest airport in Zagreb.

Rijeka International Airport is located on the island of Krk in the small village of Omišali. About 200,000 passengers pass through here every year.
Air traffic is concentrated mainly during the summer period. Many low cost airlines offer direct connections to some major European cities. By bus, taxi and car, you can easily reach your destination.

Zagreb airport is located just under 180 km from Rijeka. Main Croatian airport, it is connected with direct flights to many European cities. There is a daily connection operated by Pleso Prijevoz. It is preferable to take a trip coming from nearby Italy, Slovenia or Austria.
From Trieste, the distance is just 80 km. From Ljubljana, in Slovenia, it takes just under 2 hours to reach Rijeka. The distance from Vienna, on the other hand, is about 400 km. Keep in mind that the infrastructure in Croatia, despite recent improvements, is still being modernized.

GETTING TO RIJEKA BY BUS AND TRAIN

You can reach the city by bus from the main Croatian cities, Slovenia and Italy. The bus station is located in the center, near the Church in Trg Žabica. Autotrans (incorporated into the Arriva group since 2017) is the reference company for bus connections. It offers modern and comfortable vehicles, at really cheap prices. On the Arriva group website, by booking in advance, you can get prices with a discount of up to 30%, and more.
From Zagreb it takes about 150 minutes to get to your destination. The ticket starts from €11 per person. From Split, however, it takes over 7 hours, with prices starting from €18.10 per person.
Each person can carry one piece of luggage weighing no more than 24kg.

The railway network is not particularly efficient, which is why arriving by train is not the best option. Especially from international destinations.
