Verbuňk, also known as the Recruits’ Ball, is an enthralling dance, typical of the Slovácko region.
It was included in the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2013 and, it is said, that it is not possible to learn to dance it.
Verbuňk is in your blood!
The dancer must know how to dance and live. What makes this dance unique, however, is the fact that it is pure improvisation. No choreography. No preparation. Verbuňk is only inspiration and everything is left to the dancer.
Dancing is an integral part of many Slovacko parties. Anyone wishing to witness this fantastic Czech dance can do so during the traditional Straznice Folk Festival.
What better occasion?
The Festival takes place, since 1946, in the city of the Czech Republic, every last weekend of June. Everything is focused on folklore. And, in this land, there is an abundance of dances, songs, dances. You can attend fantastic shows, in the amphitheaters and on the stage of the Castle of the Village Museum. And, of course, witness the engaging verbuňk.

PRACTICAL INFO
HOW TO GET
Anyone wishing to reach Strážnice directly by public transport may find it difficult. The connections are not very frequent. The nearby Brno airport, given the scarcity of connections, is an impractical solution.
The best way, given the position on the border of the country, is to reach the international airports of Bratislava and Vienna, not far from the city. As soon as you land, you can rent a car and reach your destination comfortably. The Slovak capital is just over an hour away by car. Vienna, on the other hand, takes about 90 minutes.
PROGRAM OF THE STRAZNICE FOLK FESTIVAL
During the 4 days of the festival, there will be many events and activities. Popular dances and songs. Dances. And lots of shows at the Strážnice Open Air Museum – South-East Moravian Village Museum. An open-air place, truly unique, with rural technical buildings, vegetable gardens, vineyards, historic presses and cellars.
You too can be protagonists and dance and dance.
As per tradition, there is ample space for verbuňk, with a special competition that will determine the best dancer of this traditional dance.
TICKET PRICES
The ticket valid for Friday entry only, costs 500 CZK per person. On Saturdays, the price for the show is 750 CZK. On Sunday, admission costs 300 CZK.
The full pass to attend all the festival performances costs 1000 CZK per person.
Free admission for under 15s, over 70s and people with reduced mobility.
WHERE TO SLEEP
Having the opportunity to travel on your own, the choice to find accommodation should not be limited only to Straznice. On the contrary.
Not far away, in Vracov, Dj-penzion is an excellent choice for value for money. It offers air-conditioned accommodation, rooms with a seating area, a flat-screen TV with cable channels and a private bathroom. Wi-Fi is free.
