The Semana Santa Seville represents one of the greatest expressions of the world, of the religious tradition.
An international event that involves locals, and confraternities, coming from every corner of the country.

Officially, the rituals start on Palm Sunday, until Easter Sunday. Preparations, however, require significantly longer times. Both as regards the realization, and from the point of view of the activity, according to what are the three fundamental Principles: Formation, Worship and Charity.

Beyond the merely spectacular and folkloristic aspect, Semana Santa is an event full of spiritual and religious meanings. However, beautiful and exciting, processions with images of the Passion of Christ may appear to our eyes.

To frame, Seville, a splendid Andalusian city, deeply devoted. But, at the same time, linked to its origins, and characterized by a profound cultural identity. History and traditions that find their maximum expression during events like this. Or, perhaps, during the Feria de Abril, a spectacular event, practically close to the Semana Santa.

HOW TO GET

Thanks to the presence of a international Airport particularly busy, the city can be easily reached by direct flight from the main European and non-European destinations.

The processions pass almost everywhere. You can easily reach some of the central places by public transport and by walking.
With the Metro 1 Line, you can get off at Puerta de Jerez, or Plaza de Cuba.

WHAT TO SEE IN SEMANA SANTA SEVILLE 2024

From the Friday of Sorrow, until Resurrection Sunday, you can watch about 60 processions, organized by as many confraternities, both day and night.
Each, starting from their own Church, follows a predetermined path, up to Plaza Campana. Here, begins the Recorrida y Carrera Official, that is, the official path that each confraternity must follow. The procession, after having requested the access consent, continues long Calle Sierpes, Plaza de San Francisco, Avenida de la Costituciónand finally, the Cathedral.

You can watch any procession from any access point. The only exception are the areas close to the Official Route where the chairs and boxes are arranged for a fee. The number is really limited and it is almost impossible for a tourist to be able to secure a seat.

During the Semana Santa of Seville, images related to the Passion of Christ are carried in procession. The main elements of these are i Steps, composed of statues and groups of images. They are so called because of the slow pace of those who wear them.

Among the protagonists, there are the costaleros, that is, those who carry the heavy sacred images; the nazarenesinstead, they accompany the Pasos, parading with capirote on their heads and candles in their hands.

NOT TO BE MISSED DURING THE SEMANA SANTA SEVILLE

La Madrugá it is considered the most special day of all the Semana Santa of Seville. It is celebrated during the night between Thursday and Good Friday. This year, between the 28 and the 29 March 2024. Jesús del Gran Poder, the Cristo de los Gitanos and Esperanza de Triana, are some of the most revered statues in procession during this day.

WHAT TO EAT

The meat, of course, is banned throughout the Semana Santa period in Seville.
At the table, poor traditional dishes are preferred, such as chickpeas with spinach. Among the desserts, there is the Torrijas de leche, whose main ingredient is stale bread.

WHERE TO SLEEP

The availability of facilities during the Semana Santa period in Seville is particularly limited. In particular, by booking close to the event.
Our advice is to book well in advance, avoiding to stay in too central areas. In this way, you will avoid confusion and sometimes excessive prices.
