HOW TO GET TO AUSTRIA

Between plane, train, car and bus, you will be spoiled for choice to reach the Austrian territory. Of course, arriving in flight is the ideal solution; especially if your origin should be quite distant. Vienna airport is one of the busiest in Europe, connected, with direct flight with the great Capitals and the main destinations of the Old Continent. Other airports in the area are located in Graz, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Linz, and Salzburg; these are smaller airports but connected to many European destinations, often with low-cost airlines.

By train, Vienna is the reference point for those who want to arrive in Austria. Wien HBF is the central railway station, connected to the main European destinations. ICE trains, Intercity Express, connect Hamburg, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Nuremberg. With the Railjet you can reach Innsbruck, Munich, Prague, Salzburg and Zurich. The excellent EuroNight, however, reaches Berlin, Budapest and even Warsaw. Italy is also well connected with the capital, from Milan (in about 12 hours), Bologna, Venice-Mestre, Udine (in about 6 hours) and Gorizia.

Excellent connections by car and bus. The Austrian road and motorway network is highly efficient and covers all parts of the country in a capillary manner. The main cities and destinations are crossed by the Autobahn. Do not forget to buy the appropriate one Vignette, in the case of a road trip.

GETTING AROUND

For the reasons previously indicated, the car, and the motorbike, are the best means to move around the country. You will not be subject to timetables, and you can start exploring this wonderful land. You can decide to arrive in Austria by plane, and rent a car directly at the airport. If you want to use public transport, you will find in the train an excellent alternative to move around the country. The Austrian ÖBB, national railway company, guarantees excellent and efficient connections between the main destinations in Austria. You can move around with the comfortable trains Regionalexpress e Regionalzug; the former stop at the most important stations, while the latter stop at each station.

DOCUMENTS AND CUSTOMS

There is no obligation to produce documents at the border, but you are always required to bring an ID card or passport with you. It is recommended, above all, to bring the CI of their children under age, even if traveling by car or train. See our special section,about that.

Dogs and cats enter freely, provided they have a health certificate and a recent certificate from the veterinarian of the ASL of residence, attesting to good health. Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies for at least 21 days.

CURRENCY AND CHANGE

From the 1 January 2002, the Euro has become the official currency of the country. Almost everywhere, you can pay directly by credit card and withdraw cash at ATMs. Keep in mind, however, that in some small cities, and less touristy places, you may find it difficult to make credit card payments. A cash reserve is always recommended.
Who needs to enter Bank, please note that it is generally open from Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 12.30 and from 13.30 to 15.00; Thursday until 17.30. Almost everywhere, they are closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

HOUR

In Austria, the clock hands are placed one hour ahead of the Greenwich meridian (UTC/GMT + 1). Daylight saving time starts on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in October, with the hands forward an additional hour compared to Greenwich (UTC/GMT + 2).

ELECTRIC CURRENT

Throughout the country, the voltage is 230 volts, with 50Hz frequency. The sockets all have two round holes, similar to those shown in the photo below. We recommend always using a special adapter. To the most provident, we recommend taking a look at this link.

POST

Österreichische Post AG, is the company that manages the Austrian national mail. Generally, it is identified outside by the term POST in black on a white background, and a yellow logo.
The company offers all common shipping and telecommunication services.
Typically, post offices open from Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 12.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00; on Saturdays, sometimes, from 08:00 to 12:00. In some large cities, and at the most important railway stations, you can find offices open even on holidays, with continuous hours.

SHOPS

There are no regulated timetables, but much depends on the area and, above all, on the period. Shops are generally open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 18:00 or 19:00; Saturday from 08:00 to 17:00. Sundays are often closed. Timetables may vary depending on the product category.
