Photo ©, Berthold Werner PRACTICAL INFO HOW TO GET TO SCHWETZINGEN CASTLE The castle is easily accessible by car and public transport.From Heidelberg, it’s just over 10 kilometers and takes about 20 minutes to reach the destination.The closest parking lot to the castle is Schlossgarage, with a maximum capacity of 90 spaces. Open 24/7, it offers rates starting from €1.80 per hour.If the parking lot is full, you can park a little closer, at Marstallstraße 9, at the Zentrum Schloss car park, with a capacity of 180 spaces. Bus 717 runs daily from Heidelberg HBF main station to Schlossplatz, the Castle Square. The journey takes about 40 minutes. The ticket costs €5.60 full price and €3.90 reduced. You can also use the €11 single day ticket and the €14 family day ticket. WHAT TO SEE Only a few rooms of the castle are open to visitors (with an English or German guide only), and are not particularly exceptional.The beautiful Historic Theater, designed by architect Nicolas de Pigage, is considered the oldest surviving theater of its kind in Europe! Among the must-see attractions of Schwetzingen Castle, the Mosque (Gartenmoschee) deserves special mention. It is perhaps the most fascinating building in the entire complex. The gardens (Schlossgarten) are the most spectacular feature of the entire complex. Their 180 hectares are a perfect blend of French and English styles. You can admire the magnificent tree-lined avenues, woods, and shaped hedges. The fountains, including the beautiful Arion Fountain, and the Natural Theater with the evocative Temple of Apollo, are also worth a visit. And, again, the Roman Water Castle with its aqueduct, the Temple of Forest Botany, and the mysterious Temple of Mercury. Covering more than 180 hectares, the Schwetzingen Garden, known as Schlossgarten, was designed following a blend of French and English styles. 2025 OPENING HOURS AND TICKETS The Schwetzingen Garden is open daily, including holidays, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM in the summer and from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in the winter.The castle closes one hour early.Visits are only permitted as part of a guided tour. It was built between 1875 and 1914 in German Neo-Renaissance architecture, following the style of the evocative Bavarian castles. It is rightly considered one of the most beautiful castles in Romania, despite being less famous and renowned than Bran. The castle was built by order of King Carol I, who made it his summer residence after falling in love with this area. It stands on a hill in the Carpathian Mountains, along a medieval route (which still exists) connecting Transylvania with Wallachia. The interiors and rooms are sumptuous, finely decorated, and embellished with Murano glass chandeliers, embroidery, and frescoes. An absolutely unmissable site in Sinaia, not far from Bucharest. HOW TO GET TO PELES CASTLE The castle is located in Sinaia, a two-hour drive from the Romanian capital. The town can also be reached by train from Bucharest North Station. The castle is located at Aleea Peleșului 2, just 2 kilometers from the Central Train Station. You can reach the destination in about 30 minutes on foot or by public transportation. Bus lines T1, T3, and T4 stop at Piateta Foisor, about 600 meters from the castle. A bus ticket costs 3 lei per person. WHAT TO SEE Don’t miss the Hall of Honor, which extends over three floors and features beautiful tapestries, bas-reliefs, sculptures, and finely carved wood-paneled walls. The Great Armory houses approximately 4,000 pieces of weapons and armor: swords, axes, sabers, firearms, and more. The Royal Library contains rare books handwritten in gold letters and bound in leather! The Castle also houses a small Louis XVI-style theater with a royal box, 60 seats, and remarkable murals by Gustav Klimt. The electrically operated glass ceiling is also noteworthy. Don’t miss the seven terraces, decorated with sculptures, fountains, and Carrara marble vases. The building also houses a National Museum with one of the most important painting collections in Eastern Europe. OPENING HOURS 2025 Peles Castle is open on Wednesdays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and from Thursday to Sunday from 9:15 AM to 5:00 PM. Last admission is 4:00 PM. The Castle is closed every Monday and Tuesday and from November 3 to December 2, 2025, for preventive maintenance and general cleaning.
