Berlin Tegel. Info on the old main airport, closed since 2020

Berlin Tegel

Berlin Tegel was the capital’s main airport, located about 8 km north-west from the center. Numerous companies, every day, made direct connections with the main European and extra-European destinations.

The airport boasted the presence of 5 terminals, numerous services, shopping areas, bars, and restaurants. For the little ones, a play area is available in the security area of terminal C1. At level 0 of T1, on the other hand, there was a Family Room for the needs of babies and small children. A special center was located in Terminal A, dedicated to those in need of special assistance. Moreover, Berlin Tegel was perfectly accessible for people with reduced mobility.

The wi-fi line was available free of charge throughout the building.

The airport definitively ceased its activity in November 2020, replaced by the new Brandenburg Airport. The latter has incorporated the old Schonefeld airport, becoming the only airport in Berlin

The airport was perfectly integrated into the Berlin public transport network. Tegel was just 8 km away from the city center, easily accessible by public transport. However, there are no direct train connections.

The fastest way to reach the center was the Jet TXL bus that leads to the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) and the X9 bus, to the Zoo metro stop. They operate from 5 am to about midnight.

Bus 109 also took you to the center in about 30 minutes.
To get to the nearest metro, bus 128 went to Kurt Schumacher station on line U6. Berlin Tegel was included in fare zone B. In order to use public transport, you will need to purchase an AB single-journey ticket, at a cost of € 2.80 (reduced, € 1.70). Alternatively, the TAGESKARTE AB day ticket, in the version for one person, at a cost of € 7.00, or for 4 people at a cost of € 19.90. The Berlin Welcome Card AB is also valid.

There were many agencies on site to rent a car and reach the center comfortably. From this link, you can book your car at the best rate. The taxi rank, on the other hand, is located in Terminal A, near Gates 6-9, and outside Terminals C – E. Several companies operated a connection service with the city and neighboring destinations. The prices applied are subject to standard rates, equal to approximately €4.00 for each km traveled. Always choose official taxis, with a clearly visible sign, license and meter. Make sure in advance of the total fare of the trip.

Lacking a direct rail link, anyone wishing to travel long distances was forced to reach the center of Berlin. From the central railway station, Berlin HBF, numerous medium- and long-distance trains depart every day.
